I had a kick only Italian import DR650RS Djebel and a lot of fun it was too. About 1990 iirc.
Proper butch kick start, not for limp wristed girlies for sure. Just remember to kick it like you`re kicking a rapist off your mother ;) .
Anything less than 100% committed will see you in A&E with a serious leg injury. Fine once you get the hang of it. Helps being 6ft6 and 17st ;)
Nothing wrong with them at all. Just like a smaller Big without the s/clutch issues.
Remember to remove the sump plate and check the screen for shite.
Regular oil changes definitely a good idea.
Getting rid of the 1-2 system gets rid of lots of weight, down to about 155kg
Front and rear end pretty much the same as the Big

Hmm, fond memories of kick starts

My first DR600 crippled me the day collected it ! I stalled it in the traffic outside Hampton Court palace..... instinct & lack of thumper skills made me immediately chuck the kick start out & boot it. I must of had the ball of my foot on the kicker in my haste (panic) to get moving again. Result: DR600 1, Right calf muscle & associated tendons 0. I couldn't walk right for over a week !

I soon learn't the technique after that

Enjoy it Spen

I've kicked over many a big single ,XL,XT,XR etc . The bike is a DR650 SE 1994 ,re- reged 2007 , loads of paper work with it but the guy left it lying in his backyard under a cover for a year or so .Got it cheap and picking it up tomorrow haven't decided what to do with it yet :wtf:

My Brother had an XT600 Tenere which you could just boot anywhere in the cycle & it would start & not kick back...plus it had leccy foot as well. I used to hate him when I was lathered in mud trying to kick mine wile stuck in a rut ! XT 500 should have given you suitable training I imagine ?

I know the head & carb are different. 600 had a pumper carb & twin exhaust port  The 650 had a different oil setup to feed the head iirc ? Outer engine covers look different. rear end is same as Big although the shock is different. I think I still have a few bits from a job lot of 650 crap I bought a few years back.
