DR650rs v DR800

I bought my 1994 DR650 rse last year to do the elefantentreffen on as I didn't fancy trying to pick up my Triumph Explorer in the snow. After riding to the Austrian boarder on the little Dr the bike really grew on me. Although not the best bike for the Autobahn it did the job and iv been away on it several more times. At last year's dragon rally I seen a DR 800 so I'm now thinking of selling my little DR aka Daisy to pay for a DR big. As iv not even put my leg over a 800 or 750 yet. Has any one owned both bikes and is the 800 a much better bike or just a beefed up 650?

There are many similarities between the two. They share many chassis parts. The 750/800 has the benefit of greater fuel capacity, more torque and in the case of the SR43 800, better ergonomics which make it a slightly better long distance bike than the SR41/42. The downside is more weight. You really need to try one and make your own mind up.

I`ve had lots of 650s, 750s and 800s. And still have a few.
Despite sharing a lot of similar chassis components the 650 feels a lot smaller and lighter, which it is.
The front fork springs on the 650 are extremely soft which means the bike sits much lower and contributes to vague handling. Progressive fork springs improved it no end.
It feels as if you are sitting on the 800 and in the 650 due to the lower seat height.
As Nug says, you need to try an 800 to compare. Why not have a 650 and an 800?

Chris, you're welcome to come over and compare your DR650 against my DR800 and try it for size...you'll be surprised at the difference.
Dave.
