140 rear tire

Postby Mick75 » Fri Feb 16, 2018 1:32 pm

Going to put a set of (semi) off-road tires on my SR-41 for a bit of light off-roading, thinking of the continental tkc-80, anyway the size listed for the bike is a 130 section does anyone know if a 140 will fit, I'd like as big a footprint as possible, thanks

Stick with a 130 as the rim is only a 2.50 and a 140 will be too big.

Mitas E09 is better and cheaper. Lasts about 2 1/2 times as long. TKC is a good road tyre but not as good off road as the Mitas despite it looking very knobbly. TKC front and Mitas rear is what I have found to be a good compromise. That said, I will probably try the new Mitas MC23 on the front and maybe the rear next time round as the TKC is poor on anything other than dry hard pack.

Thanks Nug, I've googled the Mitas the reviews are good and they look right and are a lot cheaper than the tkcs, I'll go for the 09s and let you know how I get on

You are welcome

Not sure if you read my post right but I did not mention the front E09.... I do not recommend the front E09. I tried one on my 800 and it steered terribly and felt really horrible. I never went back to it after that and stuck with the TKC front which although I don't rate it off road, is the best compromise. The other good option for the front if you want a more off road biased tyre is the Pirelli MT 21. I found it to work really well on the Bigs although will only last around 3000 miles. Tyres are a very subjective thing of course. I have always biased my choice towards off road capability as on a heavy bike like the Big, I don't want to struggle more than necessary as it usually ends up in damage or pain. My tyre choices have all been tested over a mix of green lanes in the UK and many thousands of miles of tarmac bashing over the channel in some pretty horrible weather conditions which is usually followed by greasy slimy tracks through forests in search or Forts and Bunkers. I am looking forward to trying the MC23 but this may be on a far lighter CCM644 as it appears they don't do a 17" rear

Post a pick of the bike with its new boots

Thanks again, your right I took you up wrong, tires are such a subjective thing, after a bit more research I'm back at the tkcs, I've about 15 miles of road before I get to the trails I use and I'll be sticking to the tracks, I've endure bikes for serious off reading, and I'm not too worried if the tkcs wear out, I'll put up some pics and a updated of how I get on with them
