Brake squeal at low speed?

Postby gadgetboy » Sat Apr 28, 2018 6:49 pm

Happy weekend all - hope everyone's out riding or spannering!

I've rebuilt my dr750 over the winter, and been riding happily on it for the past 4 months or so. I have one big bear with the bike, and that's the front brake squeal I am getting at low speed.

It happens consistently every time I slow to a stop - comes on around 5/10mph all the way tintil I come to a stop... every single time. And when commuting in London, that is quite often - it's bloody irritating!!

I've tried cleaning the disc, I have rebuilt the front calliper during the rebuild, new pads (think they were sintered) and a jel braided hose. All the spokes are tight and the disc is withing service limit.

A friend who's a chassis engineer at triumph said resonance in some of their spiked wheel bikes is a real problem, but I am wondering if any of you had had this issue before? The only thing I have found on here is 'brake squeal' possibly being down to a wheel bearing actually rotating in the wheel.. but it wasn't discussed fully, more just a passing comment on a wheel rebuild feed.

Many thanks!

I had a similar problem on my 43 using Ferodo HH pads. I also found that low speed stopping was poor, but high speed good, so I removed one pad and fitted an SBS Kevlar in it's place...problem noise gone and low speed braking improved.

Maybe glaze bust the disc. I had a CCM which used to do this when the disc was glazed. I just used 80 grit paper to rough it up. it would be fine again for a time before I had to do it again. A 21" wheel is great for transmitting sound. If it was a 17" alloy it would not even be heard.

I`ve had squealing before as well due to too hard pads (HH type) and changed to Goldfren, which are softer and give better low speed braking and problem solved.
As for commuting into London, you will have to pay £12.50 per day next year as the Big is not euro 4 compliant. That`s going to solve the congestion problem?

Hi all,

Thabks for the quick replies! Sounds like it's the HH pads to blame for the ear ache!

I will just get a pair of the goldfren ones to replace these and whilst I'm at it deglaze disc.

Big bob - I assume you mean the standard grade goldfren pads are the ones to go for? Also the Euro 4 stuff for bikes in the congestion zone is incredibly frustrating and shortsighted of the authorities. It's not 100% clear how much of london will be affected, but renders all 6 of my bikes not congestion charge zone exempt. I have no interest in riding a new bike either so I'm not sure what to do if it does happen!

In addition to the above, I've seen a list of calipers that fit the dr800, but not sure if that cross pollinates into the earlier 750forks. I replied to the original thread but thought i should add it here too incase there is more specific dr750 knowledge floating about...

From 1996 there's a new front brake, and that one brakes a lot better and fits on the older models [ you will need the adapter from the new brake also]. On the new brake is the name "Tokico" and its also mounted on the bikes on this list. [only a left one will fit! ]

"Having read this post from a while back, I am considering fitting a left SV650 calliper I've got in the workshop to my dr750, to see if this is an improvement on the older kit - it's in decent condition and I'm struggling with break squeal with my standard calliper, so before forking out for new pads il try an upgrade!

Question is; does anyone have a mounting bracket spare which they would be willing to sell me!? Alternatively does anyone have a drawing of it and I can convert it to a digital DXF. And get one laser cut (along with extras if anyone else wants one!)

Thanks!

Hi All!

Thanks to everyones posts last week - i managed to get a set of Goldfinch pads for my squeeky brake problem and its fixed!

I took the Big on a camping trip with a mate (on his 2016 BMW GS800Adventure  ) over the bank holiday. I bought a last minute Sheepskin for some added seat comfort and did 900miles from Friday afternoon to Monday around most of wales. The Big never missed a beat, and kept up with the posh new BWM no worries! i will try and figure out how to add some photos when i get a chance.

Having done the trip however, I would like to make some improvements to the suspension and brakes. Might start a new thread on here, so the title can be more relevant.. what do you think?

Thanks!
