How to remove steering stem from lower yoke

Postby Yuza » Mon Nov 27, 2017 11:38 am

Hi all,

I am in the process of installing a WP Extreme fork on my SR42, and I want to reuse the stock steering stem.

After grinding off the welding, how do I separate stem from yoke? I assume I need to press it out from bottom to top, but what bush/punch should I use?

In other words, what is the diameter of the lower end of the stem? At lower bearing it is 30mm, I assume it can be 28 or 25...

I cannot measure the diameter since after grinding there is no visible mark on the metal, just a plain surface...

Thx

with a slitting disc on your grinder you can carefully cut a slit down the yoke inline with the stem. Do this both sides taking care not to cut into the stem. Then its a case of clamping the yoke [not the stem] into the vise and giving the opposite side of the yoke a clout with a mallet. It should split away from the stem. It works for me anyway

Thanks! I was thinking the same and will try.
With a 10t press it didn't move (tried yesterday)

Nice, put up a few pics when you have the bike together, be interested to know if it affects the steering lock

My DRZ fork swap has restricted the steering somewhat. I could get some more angle if I modified the headlamp subframe and maybe used a braided (thinner) brake hose. The larger fork stanchions and subsequent increase in size of the yokes soon eats up the space.

It should not affect steering lock, few guys on advrider did same mod and they say all is ok
Btw the lock is adjustable since there is one bolt per side that makes the stop against the stem column directly, I have removed the original stops from the DR
Well, let's see when I reassemble everything...

The offset on the yokes makes a difference. The DRZ yokes have more offset than standard which when combined with the larger stanchion diameter will create less clearance.
