At TDC the camshaft marks on the end should align with the top of the cylinder head.
I can`t tell anything from the photo.

I have managed to get it started but it's taken forever !
Runs ok on tickover but when revs are increased I have backfire and the odd flame !
I have the mixture screws set at 1.5 turns out.
Should they be 1 1/4 turns out ?
The air box is not connected yet but wouldn't have thought that would make any difference ?
Still not happy with the decompresser setting of 1/2mm.
When it turns over the decomp jumps back in stages until it locks up the motor.
At least I know it runs but any further advice is welcomed.

Of course it won`t run right if you have no airbox connected, and of course it makes a difference, you are running an incredibly weak mixture by not connecting it up.
Leave the pilot screws at 1 1/2 turns out.
The decompressor lever will click back after half a turn of the camshaft.
Just make sure everything is exactly as in the manual and it will run right.
RTFM!

Probably something stupid. If mine has been standing over a week I always blow down the tank breathers to help prime the pump and carbs to save needless cranking. I just started mine on Saturday after not touching it since October (criminal I know). It took a little cranking then fired up despite the stale French Fuel in it from my last trip.

I would love to know why.
Just pulled the carbs out in anger.
Had all jets out and blown through every hole I can find including mine.
Checked every part of it is clear.
Put it back on.
Bowls fill with fuel but still not starting.
Tried turning it over with plugs out to get fuel moving through.
Put plugs back in and tried again and they just look dry.
No fuel no start clearly.
But why
